VICKI AND A SUMMER OF CHANGE!  ¡VICKI Y UN VERANO DE CAMBIO!

 Bilingual Children's book

English / Spanish

RED SUGARCANE PRESS is pleased to present its first children's book, VICKI and A Summer of Change! ¡VICKI y un verano de cambio! The story is inspired by actual events in 1969 in East Harlem, New York when members of the Young Lords Organization joined with neighborhood residents to make positive community changes. City sanitation trucks rarely picked up the street garbage, and the rotting trash overwhelmed the barrio.

Young Lords and community members start sweeping the streets. Vicki, and her older sister, Valentina, join them. “You’re never too young to make a difference!” they say and discover they too can help change the world.

Raquel M. Ortiz and Iris Morales are co-authors of the story. Somos Arte design studios produced the artwork under the direction of Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez with Sabrina Cintron as illustrator and Eliana Falcon as colorist.

VICKI and A Summer of Change! ¡VICKI y un verano de cambio! is a beautifully illustrated bilingual book for children 5 to 8 years old. Topics of social and environmental justice are presented in an accessible and age-appropriate way.
