VICKI AND A SUMMER OF CHANGE!  ¡VICKI Y UN VERANO DE CAMBIO!

 Bilingual Children's book

English / Spanish

RED SUGARCANE PRESS is pleased to present its first children's book, VICKI and A Summer of Change! ¡VICKI y un verano de cambio!  Inspired by actual events in East Harlem, New York in 1969, the story centers on the activities of area residents and members of the Young Lords Organization to make positive community changes.

When the city's sanitation trucks did not haul away the street garbage, the neighborhood was overwhelmed with trash and sickening smells. Young Lords and community members mobilize to sweep the streets. Vicki, and her older sister, Valentina, join them. “You’re never too young to make a difference!” they say and discover they too can help change the world.

Raquel M. Ortiz and Iris Morales are co-authors of the story. Somos Arte design studios produced the artwork under the direction of Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez with Sabrina Cintron as illustrator and Eliana Falcon as colorist.

VICKI and A Summer of Change! ¡VICKI y un verano de cambio! is a beautifully illustrated bilingual book for children 5 to 8 years old. Topics of social and environmental justice are presented in an accessible and age-appropriate way.
